Cairo is establishing a Veterans Memorial Park to honor those that have served in our military forces. The park is under development east of the fire hall on High Street in a currently vacant lot and contain several features to both honor veterans and beautify our town.

A major element of the park is a Veterans Memorial Wall. This wall borders the park on the south side of the lot. The wall is red brick. Veterans names are engraved in the bricks. To fund the park, individuals and groups are sponsoring bricks. A sponsored brick contains a veteran’s name, years served, and branch of service.

Cairo Community Foundation recently submitted a grant to the Grand Island Community Foundation Dunlap Fund. The Grand Island Community Foundation awarded $15,000 from the Dunlap Fund towards the building of this wall. The Veterans Memorial Committee is thrilled with this gift. This gift, donations received for the butterfly memorial garden, and brick sponsorships are moving this project closer to a ground-breaking date.

Committee members are Don and Judy Shuda, Kim Wells, Becky Grabowski, LaTonna Brand, Josh and Kayla Blomstedt, Brandon and Marissa Robinson, Kirby VanWinkle, Judy VanWinkle and Charity Adams.
