The Cairo Community Foundation Grant Review Committee received two grant requests during the fall grant cycle. Grants were received from the Village of Cairo Pool and New Hope Christian School.
The Village Pool requested $364 for the purchase of basketball hoops and balls for the pool. The review committee recommended the approval of the grant to the Foundation Board. The request was unanimously approved by the Cairo Community Foundation Board.
The second request for funds was received from New Hope Christian School.
New Hope Christian School has operated in Cairo for approximately forty years in their current building located on South High Street. The school’s enrollment has increased for the past several years and predicted to continue. The current building does not offer sufficient room for current enrollment. Apfel Funeral Home located just north of the school is utilized for additional class room space. Sharing space with a funeral home is not ideal but is a workable solution in the interim.
New Hope School presented a concept to the Village of Cairo Board to trade their current building and land on High Street for land at the Community Center to build a new structure with the capacity to educate up to 78 children. The Village of Cairo approved the land trade.
New Hope School has always operated on a no debt concept. They plan to raise funds for the structure and interior before they build.
Upon completion of the new school building the former New Hope school building will become the Village of Cairo’s library and learning facility. The Cairo library committee has tentative plans to use the building as a traditional library as well as providing free wi-fi access, children’s programs, meeting room space and more.
New Hope will bring their playground equipment to the Community Center and make it available to those who visit the Community Center. New Hope plans to rent the gym at the Community Center for their morning and afternoon recess on bad weather days. New Hope expects that number to be between 10 and 15 days a year, as the kids really enjoy being outside.
New Hope provides education to children grades kindergarten through 8th grade, four day per week on an 8 am to 4 pm schedule. New Hope also plays a vital role in supporting Cairo’s non-profit daycare located at Christ Lutheran Church. New Hope purchases hot lunches from ABC Daycare. This additional revenue stream helps ABC Daycare provide service to 65 children throughout the week and up to 15 full and part-time jobs to the Cairo Community.
The Cairo Community Foundation review committee recommend to fund the $3000 grant request. The Cairo Community Foundation Board voted to approve the grant request for $3000.
Cairo Community Foundation grant applications are available at the Village of Cairo Office or online at http://cairocommunityfoundation.com. Grant request deadlines are February 1st and August 1st.
